Off to the City of Brotherly Love

Well, we just can't sit still any longer. We have to take another trip! Friday we'll fly to Philadelphia so that Anna can get her first taste of a Philly cheesesteak...mmmm! Maybe when we get back she'll be able to turn around in her car seat. Although cheesesteaks are a worthy cause, the main purpose of our visit is to get some good, quality time with our dear friends and Anna's godparents, Lynn and Nate! She can't wait to show them how she can walk and all her other cool tricks. We fly back into Raleigh on Jul. 5th and then we'll spend some time there with our buddies Suzanne and Aaron. Hope everyone has a fun 4th of July! We'll see what Anna thinks of fireworks this year...

How Big is Anna? SOOOO little..

Anna had her 15-month check-up today. Here are the stats:

Head: 48 cm
Length: 30"
Weight: 18 lbs., 14 oz.
(Not even bothering with percentiles)

Yep, it looks like a couple more months of facing backwards in the car are in store for the little Bear. I was really hoping, but I guess you just can't expect a girl to gain 5 lbs. in 3 months. It's pretty impressive she gained 3. After a shot and a finger prick to check her iron (normal this time - hooray!) we went to Chick-Fil-A for lunch. A little girl who has to go through all that deserves a little chicken.

I can't believe she's 15 months already. It seems to have flown. And Daddy pointed out the other day that she's as old as he'll be in Afghanistan. Hmm...not sure if that's very comforting. It's quite depressing, really, but we've got 5 down so what's 10 more, right? Right? Hmm....

But here's some exciting news! Anna has started walking! Her first sweet steps were to her Granny Jeanne 2 weeks ago and just this week she's been covering longer distances by herself. "Longer" being a very subjective term, but each journey begins with only a few steps, right? I know I need to get some good video of this, but she has mostly chosen to keep this new skill a secret. For example, yesterday I changed her diaper and put her down and then left her in her room to go wash my hands in the nearby bathroom. When I came back from the bathroom she had walked about half-way across her room, but when she saw me, she closed up short space between us by crawling, which is still her quickest mode of travel. So, it'll be tricky getting this on video, but once I manage to grab the video camera during one of her performances, I'll be sure to post it!

Anna went swimming for the first time this past weekend on our trip to Virginia Beach. She LOVED her friend Ellie's pool and just couldn't get enough of splashing and kicking and even willingly putting her face down in the water! Did you read that, Daddy and Auntie Mary? She wants to be champion swimmer like you guys! Here are some pics from the trip. She was so excited to get to play with her friends Eliana and Robertson again. It had been a while!

And here she is in their big, beautiful pool (so jealous!)

Happy Daddy's Day

Happy Daddy's Day to the most wonderful Daddy! We're sad we couldn't be with you today, but we hope you get your package soon. We love you!

Daddy recently updated his blog with a tribute to SGT Charlie Wyckoff, if anyone would like to read it and know more about this hero.

On the road again...

Anna and I are taking off for the weekend to Virginia Beach. Tomorrow we will be showering our dear friend Melissa with bridal gifts. Hooray! It will be fun to get away and have a mini-reunion of the MWC (now UMW) girls. As Grammie (a fellow alumna) said, "It will always be MWC to us!" Right, girls? We'll miss you, Amy and Elsie!

Bitty Bear loves Brown Bear

Lately Anna's favorite book has been Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? We read it A LOT. She mostly just likes to flip the pages and point at the animals. We spend about 20 minutes on it at night before bed and other times here and there throughout the day. At this rate, we're not going to pass the summer reading program because you have to read 5 different books. Oh well. There will be more summers to come. Today we were playing in her room and she found her favorite tome once again. She laid down on the floor, propped her feet up on my lap and happily read to herself in her Anna language about the purple cat, the blue horse, the goldfish, etc. It was so cute and I was so bummed the video camera was left downstairs on the kitchen table. But then I remembered that if I try to capture all these sweet moments on video, I won't be able to just enjoy the sweet moments.

We've been in need of a sweet moment after the difficulties that last week brought. One of Daddy's companions laid down his life for his friends in Afghanistan. We've been very sad for SGT Charlie Wyckoff's family, but thankful to know he is in Heaven with Jesus. I was so thankful that God provided Granny Jeanne and Go Gran to be here last week to provide help and support as I did what I could to help Charlie's wife and kids. Here's a photo of Anna with her great-grandparents. (There's a reason they're called "great" :-)

With Shoes Full of Feet!

This morning Anna tried on my gunky 'round-the-house flip flops. My enthusiasm for shoes is something I've proudly passed on to her! You just can't have too many. She loves to go in my closet and "try on" my collection and say "shoes" in her language over and over. It sounds something like "shusss." And look! This morning she managed to find a pair that matched her outfit!

Today we're looking forward to Granny Jeanne and Go Gran's arrival (Anna's great-grandparents). Granny Jeanne and I also share a passion for shoes. I have very fond memories of trying on her infamous selection as a child, but I would always get scolded for clunking around in her most stylish pairs of high heels - my un-glamorous ankle socks spilling over the straps and buckles. I believe some good photo footage of those strolls exists somewhere. I'll have to ask about that.
